Blue Winged Olive Bubbleback Emerger BWO Nymph Oh my! This is a great BWO (Blue Winged Olive) emerger nymph pattern and seems to get the fish fired up! It is our 'go to' Baetis nymph in the spring and fall where we fish and guide. One of our guides discovered this fly recently and we have seen very few small nymphs EVER that attract big trout from so far away! They swim out and tackle it! A small nymph! The bubble back imitates an insect that is on its way to the surface to hatch and has a bulged wing pad that is ready to bust - it is essentially a "pre-emerger". The trout recognized this weakness and vulnerability and jump on it. It is tied with a copper colored bead that looks super buggy without the flash of a traditional brass bead.

About BWO hatches and the BWO Bubbleback Emerger... The Blue Winged Olive, or BWO, is one of the most widely distributed insects on most fly fishing rivers in the country. These bugs are very common. When trout feed on BWO's they have a tendency to get very picky! That is why your fly choice on BWO is very critical. You want a high quality productive pattern that will tempt even the most discriminating trout. Use this fly as a dry dropper at the very beginning of a BWO hatch. This bug imitates a BWO nymph that is just about to hatch and emerge so it fishes quite well near the surface.
