When most people think of Washington State, they think of Steelhead.  Well that is where we live and work.  From September - March we go into Steelhead mode utilizing both traditional swinging tactics and dead drift tactics with nymphs.  Steelhead are a sought after fish that many anglers have pursued for years with little to show for it.  Our business relies on getting our clients into fish therefore we choose flies and techniques that are highly effective.  Whether it is a supersized Prince nymph, glo-bugs, articulated leeches, or a skating fly, our flies are selected by us because we know that they work.

These are some of the flies that Red's guides use to fool summer Steelhead on the Klickitat, Grande Ronde, Methow, or Wenatchee.  They are Stone nymphs with a little extra "flair" to draw in steelhead.  This pack will get you started if you are new to steelhead fishing with nymphs, or replace a few of those lost on the bottom or to an angry metalhead.  This is a good all around selection that will give you some variety.  Nobody knows why, but Steelhead love certain colors one day and other days its another color.  Try changing up quite a bit and this selection gives you enough colors to find the hot pattern. The K-Stone is the all time classic Stonefly Nymph.  It has a nicely tapered profile that trout recognize immediately as a Stone Nymph, but the magic to this fly is the long rubber legs that flex willingly in the current, and the blend of dubbing of course.  The dubbing material is composed of many different color strands that reflect various shades of light to emulate motion and fool big trout.  This fly is also an awesome Summer Steelhead fly too in the larger sizes.  Make sure to buy lots because they are weighted and you want to fish these right along the bottom where the big boys are hiding!

The Double Beaded Stone is a must have in all colors.  The flashy underside accurately represents the light colored belly of any stonefly nymph and the weight, oh man, it is perfect.  It sinks fast but doesn't seem to hang up on the bottom too much.  The density is spread out through the entire fly (versus a heavy cone or Tungsten bead) and many of our guides contend that it fishes better because of this.  Whatever the case may be, the Double Beaded Stone catches big trout and has enough weight that you won't need much if any additional weight to take the fly down through heavy, fast, and deep currents.  You can also use the larger sizes for Summer Steelhead as well, the #4 is a killer on Summer runs!

Sometimes the big trout need something that really gets their attention.  The Amber colored legs on this nymph emulate motion and chaos.  The big trout will see this as vulnerability and attack.  Combine all this with Peacock (one of the fishiest colors in fly tying!) and you have a real killer.

This fly is called the Biot Sparkle Stone, but it does much more!  It is an attractor nymph that we have used with great results before, during, and after Mayfly and Caddis hatches as well. It is tied on a Scud which gives it a very natural shape and the hook gap is one to be feared!  You won't miss too many strikes with this nymph.  It makes a great Yellow Sally nymph, immature Golden Stone, or fish it just under the surface as a dropper during PMD hatches if you want to put some fish in the boat!

This is it man, you found it.  The best Sculpin pattern that we know about it.  It is an articulated conehead head streamer that has red eyes, weighs quite a bit, and swims like its got a pulse.  Use this to target bigger trout in rivers and you won't be disappointed.  The hook is super high quality, and is a slick black coated hook with a short shank a nice gape to it.  There are 2 sizes, the #3 is very heavy and features a large cone.  The #6 is a lot lighter and smaller for slimmer water with less current.  Make sure to get a few of each.

This is the ultimate "go-to" bug on almost every river in the west.  The Pat's Stone is a killer and the quality of these flies is top notch.  The leg pattern is what sets this pattern apart from the others.  White is reflective and looks like it is moving because it throws light every which way.  Fish this underneath and indicator especially in the fast pocket water and you will catch fish if there is any there, it is just plain silly!  If a Yakima River guide had to fish in a tournament for a million dollars and could only choose one fly..... well, this might be it!

Also, a great fly for Summer Steelhead too!
