What makes this a great beginner's rod?
The cost. A lot of high performance spey rods can run in upwards of $700 and a complete package can put you well over $1200. That is a tough check to write as a new spey enthusiast no matter what your bank statement looks like. This rod was designed by world famous fly caster, Tim Rajeff whom was very selective when he took up the mission of designing a rod that would perform at optimum levels but wouldn't leave you bankrupt. This rod is not short on performance.
Are there any other spey rods to consider?
The only other rod that we would recommend to compete with this rod is the Sage VXP 7133-4 Spey Rod. We sell a few more of the Sage's mainly because of our customer's brand preference. Many folks already own some Sage Fly Rods and have had good success, so they trust their investment there. However, the Sage VXP is priced at around $600 for just the rod. It is quite a bit more money. The Echo is a heck of a rod for $350 (rod only), in fact, it is the best value that we have found in this arena.
What can I fish for and where would this rod work well?
The 7 weight spey is like the 1/2 ton pickup truck of spey rods. It is great for almost any steelhead spey application there is. This rod will handle large winter steelhead, big flies, and heavy sink tips in places like the Olympic Peninsula, Skagit River, Skykomish River, and more. It does equally well on summer steelhead rivers with smaller flies too. It is very versatile. It would be a little light for big bright King Salmon but is perfect for Silver Salmon, Chum Salmon, or any other Salmon species.
