Lightning Bug - Beadhead Trout Nymph

Another great trout falls for a Silver Lightning Bug Nymph!  All colors work very well, try Pearl during a Caddis Hatch!

Trout Nymphs for Fly Fishing

The Lightning Bug is a famous attractor nymph, in fact, it might be the most famous and was in fact developed by a late Yakima River fly fishing guide.  It's roots run deep on the Yakima, but trout everywhere seem to have a sweet tooth for this flashy nymph.  The secret to the Lightning Bug is that it reflects light from its submarine surroundings helping to give it an organic look with a bit of flash so that trout can distinguish it from random litter.  It fishes well for Caddis, Mayflies, and any other aquatic.  In fact, the #12 fishes well in lakes as swimming nymph.  Wherever you go, just make sure to have lots of Lightning Bugs in various sizes.

Nymph Fishing Video Tips

Nymphs in rivers are successfully fished on a slack line drift using a strike indicator.  This is because nearly all river nymphs either cling to rocks or crawl, very few actually swim. Wade fisherman will typically cast them upstream and let them drift downstream using mends to keep the line slack and the fly fishing "drag free" with no tension.  Another method is using a dry dropper method.   This is where you use your dry fly as the strike indicator and tie the nymph on underneath it, we have a killer video on this too!  Dry Fly and Dropper Nymph Video

High Stick Nymphing Tips and Video

High stick nymphing is also done with a strike indicator and is deadly on big rivers where fast currents suck your line underwater!  Some of the biggest trout live in water that has whirlpools and harsh seamlines.  Learn how to high stick nymph by raising your rod up high and preventing drag from occurring when the line is sucked underwater.  This is very effective, especially with rods longer than 9'.

It looks like it is moving February 29, 2012
Reviewer: Lance from Bozeman
I personally believe the philosophy that the Lightning Bug looks like it is moving when it is in fact sitting still. This  makes it look very real, although it is just a flashy bug.  i think the reflections look like a wiggling bug.  Maybe it doesn't matter because at times this thing simply kills the trout on my home river!

Reviewer: Keith Evans from CA
As long as I have this somewhere on the end of my line it will produce fish! Coming up to fish the Yakima lately and even with it being a little slow, I have never been disappointed! Thanks Reds for the awesome selection!
