VIDEO Redington Classic Trout Fly Rods - R.E.D.S. Endorsed Beginner Fly Rod!
This is the NUMBER ONE fly rod that we encourage beginners to purchase. We trust, use, and believe in this rod because it seems to accomplish what other rod manufactures have failed to do in a light weight fly rod that costs $150. This is the rod we use and recommend for everyone in our fly fishing schools, see Red's University of Fly Fishing for more info. Why is this a great rod for a beginner? This rod combines quality, beginner friendly action, and a carries a palatable price tag for a new angler. When learning to fly cast anglers need to be able to "feel" the fly rod flex and load under the tension and weight of the fly line. This teaches great timing and an understanding of the fly cast. Extremely fast action rods have very little feeling in them and the angler is forced to time everything visually and the learning curve is steepened a tremendous amount. The Redington Classic Trout has a smooth loading window and is a pleasure to cast and learn with. Eventually, many anglers will progress to a fast action rod but it is important to learn fly casting on a rod that promotes good timing. Are there any disadvantages to this rod or is there another rod I should consider? Every rod has some advantages and disadvantages. The Classic Trout has medium-fast action and a soft feel to it. This helps new anglers feel the fly cast and generate decent line speed while feeling the rod load. The downside is that when it comes to raw performance the Classic Trout isn't going to have the distance potential and line speed that fast action rods do. Keep in mind though, if you are somewhat new to fly fishing you won't be concerned about casting 60+ feet into a driving wind. Your focus will be learning to cast effectively at reasonable fishing distances. The Classic Trout will do all that. If you have some experience and are looking to purchase a good value rod that has slightly higher performance than the Classic Trout, consider the Sage Vantage fly rod . It has a faster action (but not overwhelming), but still carries a reasonable price tag at around $250. We do sell more of the Classic Trout rods, so please be confident that this is a good rod for you. What weight rod do I need? Redington Classic Trout 590-4 - The most popular all around fly rod. It is great for lakes, mid to large rivers, and is easy to cast flies of any size. Redington Classic Trout 276-4 - This is the most popular rod for anglers that plan to exclusively fish small streams. It is PERFECT for brushy streams in the mountains.VIDEO See our video of the Redington Classic Trout 2 Weight Rod Combo - Our best small stream fly rod combo! Redington Classic Trout 486-4 - This is the preferred rod for dry fly fishing mid sized streams on foot. Redington Classic Trout 690-4 - Great rod for anglers that will be fishing a lot with nymphs, sinking lines, or big flies. It casts better in the wind than the 5 weight and is better for big trout. Fly Lines for the Redington Classic Trout We have 1 primary suggestion for a fly line. This is based on our experience and consumer input. All guides and instructors will tell you "a good fly line is more important than a good rod!" Rio Gold
- a high performance line that has a non-textured slick coating and is
very good for the Redington Classic Trout. This line is well matched to the Classic Trout, it won't bog down a medium fast action rod like some other lines. This is our best selling
floating fly line. Fly Reel for the Redington Classic Trout We like the Lamson Konic Fly Reel on the Redington Classic Trout. It is a great fly reel and the right price point to match up with the Redington Classic Trout. Good solid reel. For the 5 weight, you can get either the size 1.5 or the #2. Why is the Redington Classic Trout so popular at Red's? It due in large part that we have an expansive University of Fly Fishing and teach lots of folks how to fly fish every year. The Classic Trout is what we use in our fly fishing classes and naturally students gravitate towards these rods because they have experienced just how nice they are to cast and fish. It also helps that Redington rods are engineered at the same location as Sage Fly Rods and therefore undergo much greater scrutiny than they would if they were designed anywhere else! The Classic Trout has a feeling of control, touch, finesse, but still seems to have the backbone to make the tough casts in conditions including wind, big flies, long distances, and 2 fly setups. Most companies trying to build rods at this price range simply make the rods too stiff which thwarts line control at most reasonable fishing distances. Redington Fly Rod Warranty : The Redington fly rod warranty covers breakage and their are some exceptions
including fire, theft, and loss. The angler can send in the broken rod
directly to Sage and for a handling fee Redington will repair or
replace the rod. They have a great crew and turnaround times are some
of the best in the industry. Rod Cases and Rod Tube The Redington Classic Trout comes with a nice tube. Many anglers choose to get a Sage Rod and Reel Case as well so that they don't have to take their reel off of their rod each and every time they want to use it.
