Sage 99 Series Fly Rods - Best Nymph Fishing Fly Rod

"This rod makes casting nymphs fun!"

The Sage 99 Fly Rods are the best all around nymph fishing rods, (in the Red's Fly Shop opinon!).  The 4 weight is especially good (it plays like a 5 weight) for small to mid sized nymphs.  The light action of the rod tends to hook up well with nymphs in the 14-20 range with indicators but it still throws big stones like a champ because of the length.  The flex of the rod seems to keep nymphs from getting tangled with the indicator.  The heavier rods are equally good, especially on big water.  The 99 is also VERY popular with float tube fisherman and pontoon boat fisherman who will fish sitting down and want the extra length.

For nymphing Steelhead, the 7 weight is perfect for summer runs up to about 12 pounds.  If you find yourself on the Olympic Penninsula then go for the 8 weight.

Recommended Fly Lines for the Sage 99:

Regarding fly lines, consider the Rio Indicator Fly Line if you plan to nymph fish a lot.

Sage 99 Fly Rods, built with the nymph fisherman in mind! A day of multi-bug rigs, wind-resistant indicators and the requisite high-stick rod position can be enough to make your arm fall off before lunch. But the fact is, there simply isn’t a more reliable, effective technique for finding big fish. Which is why Sage created the 99, and exactly why Red's carries it in their shop on the banks of the Yakima River.

Built with the same advanced G5 Technology as the Z-Axis rods, the most obvious nymph-specific feature of the 99 is its namesake 9-foot, 9-inch length, which makes short work of long, drag-free drifts. But that’s just the beginning. The 99’s unique taper loads lower on the blank to generate open loops, helping avoid tangles (yuck!) with multiple fly and indicator rigs. At the same time, a stiffer tip section handles heavy payload delivery but retains the sensitivity needed to detect subtle takes.

The 99s also feature slightly oversized guides specifically placed to make stack mending, shake-out and line feeding easier. Put it all together and you have a light, perfectly balanced rod that casts like a 9-footer but fishes like a 10. High-Stickers rejoice!

Fly Reels for the Sage 99:

Most commonly, consumers buy fly reels that are approximately half again the cost of the the rod.  So for instance, a fly rod that is $500 typically matches well with a reel that costs somewhere around $250 give or take.  On the Sage 99, we recommend the Lamson Guru 2 fly reel.

Sage Fly Rod Warranty:

The Sage fly rod warranty covers breakage and their are some exceptions including fire, theft, and loss.  The angler can send in the broken rod directly to Sage and for a handling fee of $50 Sage will repair or replace the rod.  They have a great crew and turnaround times are some of the best in the industry.

Rod Cases and Rod Tube

The Sage 99 comes with a khaki colored cloth rod sock and a nice aluminum tube with gold components. Many anglers choose to get a Sage Rod and Reel Case as well so that they don't have to take their reel off of their rod each and every time they want to use it.

Never liked casting nymphs before February 9, 2010
Reviewer: Paige Taffoya from Vancuover, WA United States
I have always like fishing nymphs, hated casting them and hated tangles.  At the fishing show in Portland I saw the 99's at the Red's booth and casted one and learned about the features.  I broke down and bought one (secretly worrying about remorse), as it turns out it casts nymphs like a champ.  I'm not sure if it is purely the length or if the taper has a lot to do with it but I rarely ever tanlge any more.
