Sage Motive Saltwater Fly Rod

Our staff was among the first to handle and cast this new rod.  This is a rod that has been lacking in the Sage lineup for a long time.  We host LOTS of flats fishing trips each winter and have always wanted Sage to build a saltwater specific rod in the "middle class" price range.  First off, do not buy this rod if you intend to tie a strike indicator on the end and fish for steelhead.  Do buy this rod if you want to throw long straight casts and handle strong fighting fish.  It bends deep for long pick up and lay down presentations on the flats and while testing we enjoyed a 15 mph wind that helped prove this rod can handle it.  It did not have the raw ummph of the Sage ONE, METHOD, or Xi3 but it is a good rod and super fun to cast.  For the intermediate angler it is a great fit in their arsenal.

About the Sage MOTIVE

The all-new MOTIVE saltwater rods are ideal for seasoned saltwater fans looking to complement their rod arsenal, and fly fishers new to the salt who want to experience the many hard-fighting species without breaking the bank. Constructed of time-proven materials and embodying Sageís immense saltwater experience, the MOTIVE features a powerful but smooth fast action that loads quickly to deliver heavy saltwater flies with the accuracy the sport demands. Light and responsive, you feel connected to your line for ultimate control over a full day of enjoyable casting. Yep, itís safe to say the salt has attracted another convert.

After casting and testing this whole new family of saltwater rods before they were released we have decided without a doubt that this is the best saltwater rod or big game rod out there for under $450!

  • Saltwater series
  • Fast action
  • New, unique taper design
  • Bluefin Blue color blank

HOOKED UP! The Sage Motive is flat out the baddest saltwater rod we have ever fished.  It's stout, tough, rugged and yet shoot line like a missle!  Our Motives have held up to weeks and weeks of abuse in Christmas Island, Mexico and several other great destinations and we have yet to hear one complaint!  In fact almost everyone who tries one on our destination trips buys one as soon as they get home.

The Perfect Line for your New MOTIVE???

Want to treat yourself to a new line with the purchase of a new rod, and replace that old dry and cracked line but don't know where to begin with such vast options?  We have had the pleasure of casting alot of brand new rods with a variety of different lines alongside the employees of Sage.  Every family of rods is different with tapers, line speeds, etc.  To break it down even more, within each family of rods the variables will be line weights, lengths, and finally... your use for the rod.  With so many variables within the rod, and so many wonderful lines out there on the market today how do you choose that "perfect" line??  Well to begin there are two categories in which to break down matching rods with lines.  First there is "performance preference", this is line speed and tight loop emphasis.  And secondly there is "load preference", this is the amount of rod load as desired by the caster or what is demanded by the situation.  So let us help you narrow it down a bit...

Performance Preference - for your MOTIVE
  1. Rio GENERAL PURPOSE SALTWATER
  2. Rio BONEFISH
  3. Rio TARPON

Load Preference - for your MOTIVE

Keep in mind that while these are our guides/staff and Sage's employees personal preferences the most important opinion is YOURS, so stop by our shop and we will rig up a rod with your choice of line to go try out and find what suites you best!

Love this Rod July 14, 2014
Reviewer: Erik Hanson from Kenmore, WA United States
Great value!  I purchased a 10 wt for my Cuda and Baby Tarpon rod on a flats trip last winter.  I was very impressed with how well it handled and it is as tough as nails.  My fishing partner landed a large shark with it with no issues.  I'm thinking of adding an 8wt to my quiver before heading to the flats again next winter.

Perfect for my big flies August 12, 2013
Reviewer: Joe Rotter from Red's Fly Shop
I will be carrying this rod for Tarpon and Barracuda on my Ascension Bay Trips this upcoming year.  I have tested and casted this rod, and it is perfect.  I will likely take a lighter rod for Bonefish but the 9 and 10 weights will be with me!
