Sage Xi3 Saltwater Fly Rod

We use and believe in the Sage Xi3 for anything that swims in saltwater!

The Sage Xi3 will always be one of our best selling and highest performance flats fishing fly rods.  It generates very straight casts and bucks the wind that we often encounter in the flats.  We host many weeks each year flats fishing and get to cast lots of rods.  There are 2 rods that stand out as the leaders of the pack and the Xi3 is one of them. The other is the Loomis NRX.  The Xi3 seems to sell better overall from a sales standpoint (which is a living testimonial to rods performance), but the NRX has quite a following as well.  Both are great choices and built in the Washington State, USA.  If you already are a Sage owner and trust Sage (which you should!), then go with the Xi3.

The Sage Xi3 is the next generation of the long serving  Xi2. New materials and and evolved manufacturing techniques have created an awesome new saltwater fly rod that will blow you away! These rods are more accurate than the XI2's and where we really noticed a difference is in their ability to pick up line at long distances. On the 6 and 8 wts that we have used on recent trips - we can also ad that they are more powerful than their predecessors!

Through Sage's exclusive SaltH2O Technology, Xi3 rods provide a groundbreaking level of torque and torsion resistance for superior tracking and less wasted energy at all distances. SaltH20’s unique layer interface and proprietary resin also combine for maximum strength - even in high heat environments - and significantly less weight.

This increased strength comes in handy when you need to lean on powerful saltwater fish. Just as importantly, it gives you the backbone to pick up 60 or 70 feet of line on desperate second (and last) chance casts.  Sage's latest version of G5 construction adds improved line feel for easier, more intuitive casting, and specialized saltwater-specific components complete the package. In other words, the new Xi3 is everything you need to make that first shot count.

The Perfect Line for your New Xi3???

Want to treat yourself to a new line with the purchase of a new rod, and replace that old dry and cracked line but don't know where to begin with such vast options?  We have had the pleasure of casting alot of brand new rods with a variety of different lines alongside the employees of Sage.  Every family of rods is different with tapers, line speeds, etc.  To break it down even more, within each family of rods the variables will be line weights, lengths, and finally... your use for the rod.  With so many variables within the rod, and so many wonderful lines out there on the market today how do you choose that "perfect" line??  Well to begin there are two categories in which to break down matching rods with lines.  First there is "performance preference", this is line speed and tight loop emphasis.  And secondly there is "load preference", this is the amount of rod load as desired by the caster or what is demanded by the situation.  So let us help you narrow it down a bit...

Performance Preference - for your Xi3
  1. Rio BONEFISH
  2. Rio GENERAL PURPOSE SALTWATER
  3. Rio BONEFISH QUICKSHOOTER

Load Preference - for your Xi3

  1. Rio BONEFISH QUICKSHOOTER
  2. Rio TARPON SHORT
Keep in mind that while these are our guides/staff and Sage's employees personal preferences the most important opinion is YOURS, so stop by our shop and we will rig up a rod with your choice of line to go try out and find what suites you best!

Flats fishing all star! February 8, 2010
Reviewer: Joe Rotter from Ellensburg, WA United States
Steve Joyce and I (the head guides at Red's), used the 8 weight and 10 weight Xi3 rods in Ascension Bay recently and couldn't have been more impressed. In our boat we used Sage VT2's, VPS's, Z-Axis, G Loomis GLX's, and the Xi3. By week's end the choice was easy.  The Xi3 would out cast all of the other rods and did so without strain on your elbow.  It picks up a lot of line speed quick and the action is soft enough to pull energy out of the butt without grunting.
