    • Why is a wading jacket so important?

    Wading jackets are an essential piece of fishing gear.  First off, they will keep you warm, dry, and comfortable which is huge.  You can't fish or even tie knots if you aren't comfortable and that is a pretty essential component.  Fishing in cold wet weather is only fun when the fish are biting or when you warm, when you are cold.... forget about it.  Second, wading jackets are a safety device.  A good wading jacket is designed to keep water out of your waders and trap air inside the jacket to keep you buoyant long enough to get your feet under you or backstroke to shallow water.  It works, just see our video on the Simms G4 Wading Jacket to see the proof!

    If you fall down with a Simms wading jacket on

    In the event you do take a spill (it will happen eventually), a quality wading jacket will keep you quite buoyant for a period of time.  It will also keep you dry enough to continue your fishing day in comfort or at least without catching hypothermia.  Air will squeeze out of your waders and abdomen and become trapped within the upper torso and arms of your wading jacket.  The idea is that the wading jacket will keep your top half buoyant and let you regain your footing or drift long enough to find a shallow spot.  It is not designed as a lifesaver but it can be.  There are some great articles written on how to recover your footing after falling in but the main thing is that you want your feet facing downstream and you should lay on your back with your head up and looking for a good spot to land!



    Simms Wading Jacket Buyer's Guide

    We sell a nearly equal share of Simms G3 Guide Jackets and Simms G4 Pro wading jackets.  Both have their upsides and seem to have an equal "value".  You get exactly what you pay for.  The biggest upside for the Simms G4 Pro are the pit zips like you see on mountaineering jackets.  These are nice to have anytime it gets a little warm or you are doing some activity.  It is also made with Gore-tex Proshell material, and the G3 is made with Gore-tex Performance Shell.  The Proshell is a bit lighter, more breathable, and durable.  The G4 Pro jacket has a few extra pockets on the chest and an internal pocket as well.  It is a pretty tight comparison.  A good way to debate the difference in cost is that you will paying about $80 for some pit zips and a few extra pockets.  Overall, the construction of the jackets are identical.  Both are Gore-tex and are about the same weight and thickness.  The Simms Classic Guide Jacket is also an option and if you are a XXXL or XXXXL that is your only option.  The Simms Classic Guide Jacket is a thicker version of Gore-tex and not nearly as light and supple as the Simms G3 Guide Jackets and G4 versions.  It doesn't have pit zips and the handwarmer pockets do not zip shut (which is a bummer because it is easy to fill these open pockets with water both from rain and river).  It is a great value though.  You get essentially the same waterproof performance, safety, and wrist gasket that you do on the  Simms G3 Guide Jackets and Simms G4 Pro jackets for a lot less money.  We see a lot of the Simms Classic Guide Jacket around that are 15 years old and still going strong.  Simms has made slight improvements over time but it is essentially the same jacket that they have been making for years.

    Make sure to consider the fact that you will probably be wearing this jacket over a few layers of clothing or another jacket underneath.  These jackets are just shells and don't offer much in the way of insulation.  The fact is, much of the time that you will be wearing this jacket it is going to be cold.  That means extra layers underneath.  Most folks buy up one size if they are a tweener.

    Great jacket, a bit heavier than the G3 January 17, 2012

    I had one of these jackets for 12 years and it has worked awesome.  I live in the northwest and it rains a lot everywhere I go!  This includes both fishing and boating.  I keep a boat on the Puget Sound and I wore my Simms jacket more than any other because the sleeve cuffs are water tight so water doesn't run down my arm.  I am going to order the G3 this time but did debate a long time.  The classic is a bit heavier and maybe tougher, $100 less, and was good to me but the G3 is much lighter and I am going to buy it this time.
