Questions about this trip? The Yakima River
Red's
Fly Shop and the Canyon River Ranch Lodge both sit riverside in the
heart of the Lower Yakima Canyon, the most popular fly fishing section
of the Yakima River. This gives our guests the convenience of being at
a quality pro shop, lodge, and on the river at the same time! The
Yakima is a great day trip from Seattle, or utilize some of our on-site
lodging to make it an overnight adventure.
The Yakima is a Catch and Release fishery that boasts great fishing for
wild Rainbow and Cutthroat trout 365 days per year. The upper 75 miles
of this river enjoys the distinction of being Washington's only blue
ribbon trout stream. The Yakima begins on the Cascade crest above the
town of Cle Elum as a relatively small mountain river. In this alpine
area, it flows gin clear through a forest dominated by towering firs
and pine trees. As it continues East towards Ellensburg, it takes on an
appearance more characteristic of a prairie stream, with a Cottonwood
river bottom and lots of braided channels. Approximately 3 miles South
of Ellensburg, the Cottonwoods and Timothy hay fields transition into
the high sage brush hills and steep basalt walls of the famous "Lower
Canyon".
Our shop sits along the banks of the river in the center of this
section. Although the Canyon is the most popular section of the Yakima,
we like to explore the other parts of the river, as well. Clients who
fish with us multiple times each year appreciate seeing new water,
different scenery, and utilizing different techniques to catch fish. We
guide all of these sections throughout the year, and thoroughly enjoy
the unique characteristics and challenges each of them possess.
A Washington Freshwater Fishing License is required for this trip.
Testimonials
"Over the past few years my travels have allowed me to take on
the rivers that you read about, the Madison, Gallatin, Firehole, Snake, Big
Wood, South Platte and others, but without a doubt the Yakima is at the top
of my list. The scenery is awesome, winding from the upper canyon through
the farmlands and back into the lower canyon with fishing as diverse and
beautiful as the landscape around it. Spectacular Cutts in the upper river
to big bows in the lower canyon, it doesn't get any better than this. Just
when I think I've seen it all, the Red's guides show me a new section,
season, or technique."
