Yakima River Fishing Report
The Yakima is finally starting to come back into shape, and after a few weeks off the water, it feels great to be back out there.
Flows are currently fishable, though still on the higher side. The most productive water has been slower sections think behind islands, softer seams, and the inside edges of larger eddies. Covering water hasn’t been the most effective approach lately. Instead, success has come from slowing down: either anchoring up and making multiple drifts through quality water, or getting out of the boat and wading when conditions allow.
Wading is possible in select areas, but caution is key. Stick to softer edges and avoid fast, off-color water, knee-deep or less is a good rule of thumb at these flows.
We’re still seeing a few Skwalas fluttering around the shop, so there’s hope that our favorite spring hatch isn’t completely behind us. A bit more clarity in the river should help bring that back into play.
In the meantime, nymphing has been the most consistent producer. Stonefly nymphs, baetis patterns, and even worms are all solid options as we ease back into the season.
With improving conditions on the horizon, we’re optimistic that dry fly opportunities will pick up soon.
Welcome back, Yakima River.
