Now here is a new pattern for you. A fresh twist on an old favorite that has yet to greet the lips of so many trout. This fly utilizes a Bronze bead to get some weight and attention but still flies under the "hook radar" of most every trout. The body is ribbed with a strand of crystal flash and the legs are built from crystal flash too which emulates a struggling and swimming nymph that is either emerging or fighting for its life. The big trout see this and key in on the flash which appears to be bubbles being created by their flailing legs. Hang on tight when you are fishing this one!

If there was a vote on the most productive "small nymph" pattern for trout, it is likely the winner would be a Copper John pattern. It is a deadly fly on any water and a must have in your fly box. Carry lots and make sure to get the size range from top to bottom without too many holes in it. There are time when our guides can only catch fish on one size, one color. Black Red, Copper, Chartreuse... make sure to have them all and experiment with various colors if the fishing is slow. Sometimes the lighting is such that a certain color will make them snap! Bring a big net and a camera.
The Chartruese works especially well just prior to big Caddis hatches like the Mother's Day Caddis hatch on the Yakima River, Madison River, or Big Hole River. This fly imitates the bright green insect very well!

Oh my! This is a great emerger pattern and seems to get the fish fired up! One of our guides discovered this fly recently and we have seen very few small nymphs EVER that attract big trout from so far away! They swim out and tackle it! A small nymph! The bubble back imitates an insect that is on its way to the surface to hatch and has a bulged wing pad that is ready to bust - it is essentially a "pre-emerger". The trout recognized this weakness and vulnerability and jump on it. It is tied with a copper colored bead that looks super buggy without the flash of a traditional brass bead.

This fly was DEMANDED by our top guide after he fished a few that he was given from our product rep. It fishes all year long for a variety of hatches and is a mainstay in our fly boxes amongst our entire staff. It sinks fast and has a quality that seems to attract lots of fish, especially some big ones. It works great as a dropper as long as you use a pretty buoyant dry fly (#8 or bigger) as the Tungsten Bead drags smaller flies down under water.

This fly is a "go to", one that you don't have to consider conditions, lighting, depth, or size. The tungsten bead works very well as a dropper nymph, but just make sure to get a dry fly that is quite buoyant so that it doesn't sink... until a fish bites this nymph which it surely will!

This fly was put onto us by one of our fly sales reps, he originally told us "you have to buy this... in fact, you bring this fly into your shop and if it doesn't fish and sell then I will buy every one of them back!". That was years ago and he never got a chance to buy 'em back! This fly is kind of unassuming, but it fishes like you wouldn't believe. Use it any time of year for trout in any river.
