We're not sure why it got the name WD-40 but we think it is because it seems to work for a little bit of everything! This is a fantastic fly and was originally designed as a Midge but we have GREAT success on it during hatches of small Mayflies, especially BWO's. The thin body makes it an easy to spot fairly unassuming pattern that doesn't raise the danger flag in the trout's mind. It fishes very well all year long but it excels at fooling picky trout that have been beat-up with a Stone nymph, Prince Nymphs, Pheasant Tails, and such. The hook is a light wire Scud style hook that gives this fly a fishy feel and hooks trout on even the lightest takes.

This is a the Crescent wrench of chironomids. Bring lots of these and fish them on a long leader under a strink indicator or on a slow retreive behind a clear intermediate sinking line. These have a generous hook gap and are certain to grab even the lightest takes from smart trout. This fly is one of the top flies for any stillwater destination in the country.

Hatching chironomids are the number one way to put up big numbers of trout in lakes. As the chrironomids begin to hatch the top end of their body swells up and is holding the wings/legs of the adult insect. Fish these flies as you see the bugs start to hatch and you can even fish this pattern just under the surface to boiling trout that are sipping emergers. The heavy top end of this pattern keeps it real during the hatch and will fool the big boys.

Midge larvae is red just as it comes out of the soil at the bottom of the lake. Although it is not long after they come out of the soil that they begin to turn their natural color, the fish still key in heavily on the Blood Worm appearance of this Chironomid Pattern. The silver bead on this pattern helps keep it stable underneath your indicator and will be certain to put you at the top of the lake game. Buy plenty of these! There are days where red means a 10:1 advantage.

This fly does it all. Use it in rivers, lakes, ponds, mud puddles or wherever you think there might be fish. This fly gets it done. It originated as a Chironomid Pattern for Stillwater anglers but has grown into much more than that. It works well in a variety of circumstances and our guides have found that it works well in rivers when the water is slightly off color.

The Brassie is likely the most under-utilized "Big Trout" patterns there is. It looks like a variety of things and the shiny body and bead reflect surrounding light when underneath and this fly will take on the natural segmented look of a real insect. It is a Midge Larvae at heart but you will find that it fishes year round almost everywhere. Our guides love it because of its density and fish it underneath a dry fly very often.
