Beads are fished with a trailer hook directly below the bead placed about 1” below the bead. We like Gamakatsu Glo Bug hooks for this. There are cheaper hooks out there but none seem to hook fish like these. Use the Size 4 for Steelhead and the Size 10 in situations with picky summer steelhead or when trout are present as the large #4 can potentially harm trout.
Rigging the Bead:
There are lots of ways to do this. You can use tooth pics, weed whacker cord, tie a not, or whatever. We will agree that there is no “right way” but what we can say is that our guide staff pretty much sets all these up the same way. We run tie the hook on, then run the tippet through the bead 4 times and let friction hold the bead in place. The bead should be about 1” above the hook.
Gamakatsu Glo Bug Hooks
This is the preferred hook for using with bead setups for fishing trout and/or steelhead. At your convenience we carry these in a 25 pack, follow the link below. These hooks are scary sharp, we get scared even looking at them! They can also be used for tying your own yarn egg patterns as well. We carry these in two sizes, #10 and #4.
